Hand Lettering 101

I started calligraphy 7 days ago and have been doing well (in my opinion). I practice traditional and modern calligraphy. I know she recommended different tools than what I used but I saw results that were just as good. I used a dip pen. It gives great, informative information for beginners.

I had multiple calligraphy books in my cart and read a ton of reviews, so happy I went with this one. It’s super cute and exactly what I was looking for. It includes uppercase and lowercase script/calligraphy, as well as regular upper and lowercase fonts. The practice exercises and worksheets are great. I am planning on making copies with my printer though.

I'm really enjoying this book bc I've been wanting to learn calligraphy/creative lettering for a long time but didn't know where to start. I love the spiral pound and find practicing very relaxing. My only complaint so far is I like using thin sharpies (which she actually recommends as one of her favorite tools) but it bleeds through the paper, which makes me sad - see photo. I wish the paper used in the book was a little thicker.

I’m in LOVE with this! This book was beautifully designed with new calligraphy hobbyists in mind. There are lots of tips, tricks, techniques, lined practice space, and there’s even blank spaces for drawing doodles. So glad I snagged this, along with some calligraphy pens I purchased on here. I can’t wait to get started 🙌🏼

This is a fun and pretty lettering book! It doesn’t have many font options but it does cover the basics. This is not something that will make you a calligrapher overnight, it will take a lot of practice/ muscle memory to master. I wish there was more space in the book to practice all the letters.. I will use other lined paper for that I suppose. I got one book for myself and two as fun little gifts for family members who often send out invites and enjoy doodling. I have already made my new daughter’s baby ornament using the font from the book. Practiced on paper several times then very slowly sharpied onto an ornament. If I wanted to use this to address several envelopes it would take me a very long time! As stated, this is an introductory book so don’t expect to become an expert right away or to be able to naturally write in modern calligraphy. I still found it useful and enjoyed playing.

Brought this for my little cousin because she wanted to make a cute card for her mom. She loves it and stated that the instructions are clear and easy to follow. It’s so easy that I attempted a design myself. Overall, I would highly recommend this as a gift for Christmas or for anyone wanting to learn about lettering for future designs

First of all, lets start off with how cute this spotted book is. It has these gorgeous gold trims on the corners that look so fancy I quite honestly don't want to even write in it. I love learning calligraphy on my iPad so I actually scanned them into my iPad so that I can practice forever without having to damage my book. You guys have no idea how cute it is!! Maybe one day when I find the pretty calligraphy pens I will get the nerve to actually write inside of it. For now I'll just keep on practicing on my iPad. I kept searching everywhere and all of the calligraphy books were so darn expensive-- literally hundreds of dollars to learn. I carry the book in my purse (book bag) everywhere I go and practice every chance I get. I cannot believe how easy ChalkFullofLove makes this look. I have actually gotten up the nerve to try my own hand at calligraphy and create things for my home. The book starts off with the basics from lowercase, to capitals and even numbers and works it's way to different strokes and actually creating full art pieces. For less than $20 you can try your hand at calligraphy and it's so much fun... not to mention relaxing! I put up a photo of the pretty cover and one of the evolution of designs to show you how she goes from simple to intricate. I also posted a photo so you can see one of the creations I made from practicing. I practice any chance I get and I love it. I hope that you do too! Don't wait...get your copy as soon as possible. I have used lots of lettering/calligraphy workbooks in my life. Some have left me bored, foggy brained and undeveloped. I am very particular about how a book is ordered if what it describes has an order and process to it. This book was very well done!!!!! Proper order, great instruction , encouragement and plenty of practice area . They even recommend using tracing paper which to me, they didn’t have to do that because more books could be sold. I truly feel that this is an outstanding tool to develop the skill of lettering , while encouraging progressing to your own style. It leaves me inspired.

Love it! It took me about 7-8 hours of practice to learn how to flourish my letters I am getting pretty good at it. Great for beginners and I love the extra fonts they teach. The elements are so cute. You don’t need any special pens I use all different types. The smoothest lines are created by a normal size sharpie. But practicing with regular pens will save you money.

This lettering book is well laidout and includes practice sheets. I’ve purchased several lettering books and this is by far my favorite.Hand Lettering 101 is a good size, and opens flat for ease of use. The letters on practice pages are reasonably large, which is great for someone learning to hand letter.I recommend, initially practicing with a light colored brush pen, or photocopying the sheets. The author includes several styles of hand-drawn font to copy and practice.Overall a wonderful book. As a heads up, I didn’t expect the slightly religious undertones, so that was a bit surprising.

Wish I could give a 4.5 lol. This book was great at helping me understand the techniques behind hand-lettering, and gave me just enough room for practicing. The book is beautiful, feels sturdy, and the paper is thick enough to stop most pens and markers (except sharpies) from bleeding through. However, there are multiple typos and other errors in the content that could have been fixed by a semi-competent editor. Otherwise, the author is very talented and the book is fun to go through if you are interested in hand lettering. I got through it in about a week by doing roughly 4 pages per night.

I recently ordered this work book and it's amazing! It is so practical with hands on letter drills and exercises. And it's beautifully designed as well. I've been looking for something to do that would relax my mind and that I'd enjoy. I'm enjoying intentionally slowing down and writing out Bible verses and quotes. There are even fun projects to do/practice/trace with cute quotes like 'But first coffee' 'Never give up', etc. Such a fun thing for anyone needing to intentionally slow down and relax!!

Did a quick overview of the book (naptime reads!!) and can't wait to get started!! Need to get my materials together! As I read, I felt as though Sarah was sitting right here with me at my kitchen table telling me all her handlettering secrets. Very clear instructions and lots of space to practice and doodle. Love the feel of the book and love how it lays flat with the spiral binding. It's really large so you have room to lay your arm down comfortably too as your practice which I think is super helpful when you might have shaky hands. Spunky wording in all her instructions and fun phrases to practice with. This is seriously a work of love and I can tell Sarah spent a lot of time and effort into creating her FIRST BOOK! What an accomplishment! Definitely a good starter to learning the fun skill of handlettering! Perfect for beginners!

Started teaching myself hand lettering. I agree with another poster that there are many blank pages for practicing but there is something neat about seeing improvements so that's not all bad. I also use the alphabet page as a reference. For the money, I think it's a decent investment. It's the only book I've purchased and I feel like I'm on track. I also look at online videos and instagram posts which are greatly helpful.

I LOVE this book - it offers clean & pleasant practice pages with great smooth paper - perfect for my Tombow brush pens to glide across. I have collected many hand lettering books over the years but I find that the books that are full of instructions, tips and tricks are often the lease inspiring for me. I start thinking too much and just get nervous. With this book, there is a sufficient amount of instructions, but I think the author's point in giving you so much practice space is that the real KEY to getting good at this craft is just repetition. Really no matter how much you read about it, you won't learn to make beautiful letters without practicing.I suppose it depends on the person, but I am a very hands-on learner, and I memorize things best through writing. Hand lettering and calligraphy is such an enormous subject, that perhaps the best way to learn is to start small - just learn this one style, learn the basics, then you can move on to other fancy forms and flourishes. This is exactly what the author does - she teaches you one simple but beautiful style to get you started. She reenforces her teaching by offering you a large, clean, lovely space to practice. I just love how I don't need to use scrap paper to practice, and I can see my progress by flipping through the book.After you get the letter forms down, she moves on to teach you how to connect letters and how to make them "dance." But those lessons I feel like are extras. The main point here is acquire a solid foundation through practice.I think this is a great book for the serious beginner. On the other hand, you don't really need this if you already have basic hand lettering skills.Also, I highly recommend getting a pack of the Tombow dual brush pens to practice with. They're easy to use for a beginning, super smooth and the colors are so bright. All my letters in the photos are done with Tombow markers. The primary color pack is on sale on amazon now for around $12! That's a steal.Hope this review helped!

I love this book! I have always had pretty nice handwriting in general but this really fine tunes the way calligraphy is written. This is a hard cover book with nice quality paper and very easy to follow instructions. The author also includes tips on what tools and paper you can use for different projects. It teaches you how to mix and match fonts and flourishes so you'll have super fancy writing in no time. There are plenty of areas to practice throughout but as you can see, I wanted my husband to enjoy it as much as I do. Great for all skill levels!!

Love this book! Other reviews said there's no direction, I completely disagree. There's lot of great advice, good directions, and lot of practice pages. I especially love the part of the book where it brings it all together. It's one thing to do cursive lettering and another to write cursive phrases, sentences, and such. After just a few days of practicing my faux calligraphy has gotten so much better! I gotten a few other books and I haven't been satisfied. This is a keeper.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn to hand letter and it quickly improved my understanding of how to! Of course practice makes perfect so I really appreciate the practice pdf provided by ChalkFullofLove and the publisher! Being able to print those off and continue to learn more ways to letter is something that I'm looking forward to doing. I've purchased several hand lettering how-to books and this seems to be the one I connect with the most. More than likely that is because this is just more my style of hand lettering that what is in other books.(tip: I would use 80lb or 110lb when printing off the workbook!)
